Roadless area of state WMA. Upland forests are oak-ericad and oak boulderfields, much of it appears to be old growth. Other areas in swamp have greater cover by Pinus rigida or Carex stricta. Gradation to upland indicated by decline in sphagnum, Osmunda and increase in huckleberry.;Seepage trough on broad, flat mountain top with sandstone lithology. Sterile sand alluvium on broad flooplain with small sand bottomed ephemeral channels in places. Community is a mostly deciduous forest with somewhat stunted and open canopy of black gum with some red maple and pitch pine. There is patchy mountain laurel and a dense swath of cinnamon fern with a few other wetland herbs.
Representativeness
Small patch (large for type) of black gum swamp on mountain top. Other areas of swamp have patches of pitch pine dominance, but black gum seems more extensive.
